Safety Tips for Buying & Selling on India Classifieds
Online classifieds are a great way to find a bargain or sell quickly — but scammers do target buyers and sellers. Follow these simple rules to stay safe on ADS4ME and any other online marketplace in India.
Top 5 Safety Rules
- Always meet in a public place — coffee shops, mall parking lots, or busy metro stations in Mumbai, Delhi, Bangalore and other cities are ideal. Never invite a stranger to your home.
- Inspect before you pay — check the item works, test phones, check vehicle registration papers. Once you hand over cash, it's hard to get it back.
- Pay only in person via UPI, NEFT, or cash — never send money to someone you have not met face-to-face.
- Never share OTP, Aadhaar, PAN, or bank details — no legitimate buyer or seller will ever ask for these.
- Trust your instincts — if a deal seems too good to be true (a brand new iPhone for ₹5,000, a luxury car for ₹50,000), it almost certainly is.
Common India Classifieds Scams to Watch For
- Advance payment scams — seller asks for a token advance before you have seen the item. Never pay in advance.
- Fake property listings — well-photographed flats at half market price with the "owner" asking for a deposit before showing. Never pay before seeing the property and the owner's documents.
- OTP/UPI fraud — buyer sends a "collect money" QR code instead of a pay QR code. Understand the difference — you should never scan a QR code to receive money.
- Job scams — "employer" asks for a registration fee, training fee, or laptop deposit. Legitimate Indian employers never charge job seekers anything.
- Courier scams — buyer agrees to pay via courier with "cash-in-package" — there is no such system. Always receive payment before handing over the item to a courier.
